Septic tanks Pumping, Repair in Kathmandu Valley & Surrounding Districts

You know the government of Nepal imposed new rules for making septic tank construction compulsory in 2014. Now, you won't get a site plan approved without having a septic tank while building your house. A septic tank is a reservoir situated below ground level where the waste materials drained from the kitchen and bathrooms go in.

Generally septic tanks have two partitions where solid and heavy sludge settles at the bottom of one chamber and liquid gets collected in another chamber through holes in the partition walls. The partition where liquid gets collected is also called a soak pit. From this partition the liquid is seeped to the ground.

Inside the septic tank, these waste materials undergo some natural phenomenon where they get decomposed. Anaerobic bacteria play a significant role in breaking down the solid sludge. Septic vent pipe must be installed  to release the sewer gas from the septic tank to avoid toilet blockage and foul smells. In those areas  with the facility of dumping sites or sewage treatment, the waste is then drained from the septic tank into the sewer system.

In Nepal there are mostly two types of septic tanks in practise. One is modern and scientific rectangular shaped tank with proper partition chambers and the other is conventional cylindrical shaped. Rectangular concrete septic tanks are made up of brick walls and stone walls in modern ways whereas Ring shaped septic tanks are made of concrete rings which are also used to construct water wells. The average depth of rectangular septic tanks is 5 feet but Circular septic tanks have minimum depth of 5 feet and may be upto 20 ft or more. Construction cost is low for traditional cylindrical septic tanks and occupies less area but it has more disadvantages in comparison to modern rectangular tanks and cost you more in the long run.

Some of the Advantages of Modern Septic tanks over Traditional Septic tanks are:

  1. Rectangular septic tanks fill slower than cylindrical tanks Because surface area is more and seepage rate to the ground is high.

  2. A rectangular septic tank is easier to clean and is less risky because of less depth.

  3. Because of more depth in cylindrical septic tanks groundwater may get collected and act as a well so tanks fill faster

  4. Cylindrical septic tanks have big and heavy covers which are tough to remove and also require plaster sealing after cleaning. But rectangular tanks have small, light and strong covers which can easily be removed.

  5. Cylindrical septic tanks don’t have partition walls, so other tanks must be constructed for soak pit purposes.

Moreover, Septic Tank filling duration also depends upon the number of users, type of soil in that area. Water seeps more in sandy soil unlike clay soil. There are more staff in commercial buildings or in construction sites. So fast filling of septic tanks is common in such places. Leakages in the taps and running toilets also fill the septic tank much faster. Also the septic tanks that are constructed near wetlands experience fast filling problems.

These are the signs that indicate your septic tanks might be full :

  1. Flushing problems or slow draining of toilet, kitchen and shower drains.

  2. Unpleasant smells from the septic tanks or sewer chambers.

  3. Wet around septic tank covers.

  4. Pool of water around septic tank or standing water over septic tank.

In many parts of Nepal, the municipal sewer system or treatment plant isn't available to dump the faecal sludge. In the manual process of septic tanks and sewer cleaning ( dhal safai), we dig a pit nearby and dump the sewage sludge. If there is no spare land to dump the sludge then we pack it in the sacks and load in the sewage truck and dispose of it in the permitted dumping sites.  We also provide deep cleaning of Septic Tanks in the construction sites or residential homes where the new structures are to be built by removing tanks.

Some common problems you would be facing in the septic tanks.

1. It fills faster:

People throw pads, napkins, tissue papers, condoms, rags, wipes etc in it. It may block the main pipe connected to the sewer. This can also cause slow sink, tub draining, Slow Flushing toilets and foul smell from the sewage inspection chambers or septic tank. Moreover, the pies from the kitchen and bathroom are drained in the same partition. The wastewater from the kitchen consists of detergents, soap and various chemicals which will mix up with the faecal sludge that will kill every bacteria (aerobic and anaerobic) inside the tanks which helps in breaking down the sludge. Never use harpics and acids to clean toilets in those areas where there are no sewerage systems or treatment plants and have to rely on septic tanks. It kills the important bacteria that decomposes the septic wastages (septage), and as a consequence the septic tanks fill faster.

2. Leakages of septic tanks:

It has been found that the walls of the septic tank are 4 inches. You should be aware it's the place where it will fill with moisture all the time and also the liquids in the tank are acidic which weakens the tank. Four inches walls cannot hold it for a long time. Weak walls of the septic tank can cause leakage in your homes, which can make wet/damp walls or even the tanks can get collapsed. Most of the time, these leakages become a problem because they will produce a foul smell, pollute the surrounding and cause several diseases. Often, this leakage can go to the neighbour's side or to the road.

3. Level of pipe in septic tanks:

The level of the pipe should be slanted towards the septic tank from the inspection chamber and the toilet. Usually, in traditional septic tanks, it is made on the same level without maintaining the slope. It causes frequent blockage on draining. Many times the sewage inspection chamber (mangal) may leak. The leakage may go anywhere from the neighbour’s house to the water tanks, well or to the road.

4. Partition walls in septic tanks:

Partition walls are made only 4 inches in most of the septic walls that always have risks. The wall becomes weak, and there is always a chance the wall may collapse. If it collapses, the slap of the septic tank may too collapse. Many incidents might happen during that time. Septic tanks with improper partition walls or without partition walls get filled faster because solid sludge and liquid get mixed in the soak pit section. Solid sediments form a layer and block porous holes and prevent seeping of waste water in the ground.

5. Hidden septic tank:

Many times septic tanks and inspection chambers are hidden under mud. House Owners will not keep them exposed for cleaning the septic tank and cover it with plaster, tiles, marbles or blocks. You should be critical about this because it will cost you high if problems arise in those tanks and need cleaning. These are some of the common problems you will face if you build the septic tank in traditional ways. We are not saying these problems won't be there if you build the tanks in modern ways. However, We can assure you the chances of having these problems are less. Contact us to get a specialist who will help you in the construction of the septic tanks, sewage inspection chambers, installation of drain pipes and many more . We make a plan and particular layout as per your requirement. We promise to make a risk-free septic tank for your home.

6. Leaking of waste water to the water well or water tank

Many people construct septic tanks and drinking water tanks or water wells nearby. Since the walls/bottom of the septic tanks aren't plastered or made water proof, the waste water seeps from the wall and drains to the water tanks and wells nearby. As a consequence they suffer from different health hazards. The minimum distance between septic tank and water well must be at least 50 feet. You can hire Safa Ghar for proper design, construction, maintenance and inspection and pumping of septic tanks in Nepal.

Note at the end

Installation of these tanks is not DIY projects to try yourself.  Getting professional advice has always been the first and foremost choice for intelligent people.
